    Explanation :

    Let the numbers be x and 88 - x respectively

    3x/10 = 36(88-x)/100

    => x = 6(88-x)/5

    => 5x = 528 - 6x => 11x = 528

    =>x = 528 / 11

    => x = 48

    Smaller number 88-48 = 40
